New Jesu? Sweeet.
This is one of those bands that just strikes a certain chord with me
for reasons that are hard to explain. I eat up Justin Broadrick's poppy
dreamboat metal like cotton candy. I wait and wait for any news of upcoming releases, and when they're finally announced, I have to endure even more cruel waiting until they're actually out. I don't begin to really know why I fawn over these guys so much. Hell, the recent output of the band hasn't even been that great. The Why
Are We Not Perfect? EP was basically a one-song wonder, the split with Battle of Mice was disappointing, and
don't even get me started on the electronica-laced snoozefest that was the
split with Envy.
And yet when Broadrick recently announced on his blog that
two new Jesu releases were on the
way in the coming months, I felt that same ridiculous twinge of excitement that I always do.
That's mainly because, even if J.B. has long since proven that he's incapable
of writing a completely consistent album or EP, the tracks where he really nails it are more than enough to
compensate. For all the directionless fluff that lined the walls of the
divisive Conqueror, there were three or four tracks that were so goddamn
catchy and heartfelt that I was willing to forgive the weak stuff like "Mother
Earth."
...and "Old Year." And "Weightless and Horizontal." And...yeah, you get the point.
Anyway, the two new ditties will apparently be titled Opiate
Sun and Infinity; the former will be an EP due in late October, the latter a single-song
LP slated for this month. I'm always wary of the whole one-track full-length gimmick, but considering
that many of Broadrick's efforts are one-trick-ponies anyway, there's a good
chance the bloke could pull it off. It's the Infinity EP that I'm
really anticipating, because as any fan of the man's work knows, its
Broadrick's EPs that always deliver the goods. One thing's for sure; between this generous offering
of delectable new Jesu goodness and
the smattering of new Devin Townsend releases
on the horizon, its looking like I'm going to be stuck in giggling little
schoolgirl mode for the next several months. Its not a good look for me, to be sure, but
I do what I can.
Just do me a favor, Justin. Stay away from the lame techno
drums this time. Seriously....those sucked ass.
