Recently I had a phone call from my friend. He had been engrossed in Fable 2 on the Xbox 360 and had phoned me to tell me that he had married a fine woman, but had been bound by duty (and gameplay) to leave on a quest for many years. Upon his arrival, he continued, he was delighted to hear the news that he was a father, to a healthy baby boy called Craig. But upon further polygonal inspection discovered that Craig was infact, let's say, of a different ethnicity. I won't tell you how the whole situation panned out afterwards, but at this point I truly believed that that was possibly the peak of video gaming, and what it had all been building up to since Pong. Until I saw this.
This gem is from Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, I don't know the story of the game but it obviously includes digital Blind Guardian turning up in full medieval kit, appropriately period stage set and guitars that could chop down an Orc's treehouse. They then perform an exclusive track to a ruinous crowd of fucking awesome fist-thrusting demonic creature-bastards. Beat. That. Anyone.
When games and metal collide with such an explosion of awesomeness (not Guitar Hero) one has to wonder if life is going to get any better. So if there are any powerful industry players reading this, here are my top 5 ideas for quests power metal RPG.
1. Travelling on a Dragon's back to an Enchanted Land to fight for Rhapsody on Fire's right to lose the "on fire" part. With a motion captured Christopher Lee.
2. Bringing Sam Totman's severed head to the King of the Nordic Twilight.
3. Finding Ripper Owens a guild to join.
4. Gaining karma points by saving Timo Tolkki from going mental.
5. Anything that results in Dream Evil's actual Book of Heavy Metal turning up in your inventory.
Don't dare tell me there's not a fucking market for that.
