When hearing me tell him about the lifespan of the Assyrian empire (like a millennium and a half, ending in around 600 BC), he told me that was before humans were trucking around. I had to inform him that the current year is not counting up from the beginning of human history, but is arbitrarily counting up from the fairly modern times of the dawn of Christianity.

And yet I can have a discussion with him about whether or not Zhukov was a better general than Patton, the effectiveness of the Finnish armed forces against the Russians, Polish use of biplanes to combat Nazi bombers, the Polish government-in-exile during WW2 and the Cold War, the Red Army's conduct in WW2, etc.

I think my face has frozen into some sort of shocked, quizzical look.
