Laying the Groundwork for My Top Ten

Every December comes the strangely difficult task of constructing my metal top ten list for the current year. The process of trying to form what I remember at that point into a more or less definitive ten album list is usually a nightmare. In order to (hopefully) avoid all of the scrambling and apparent temporary memory loss, I have decided that this year I will try to collect my thoughts on the year in metal before the last minute. So, consider this, my first progress report on metal in 2008, part of the prelude to my eventual top ten (and an undertaking as much for my own sake as for that of the reader).

The Locks:

Arghoslent - Hornets of the Pogrom

Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels

Pharaoh - Be Gone

The Leading Contenders:

The Gates Of Slumber - Conqueror

Jex Thoth - s/t

Manilla Road - Voyager

Meshuggah - obZen

Opeth - Watershed

Candidates for EP of the Year:

Agalloch - The White EP

Moonsorrow - Tulimyrsky EP

Yep, we're in the same boat pretty much, minus a Jex Thoth or two.
