Not sure how we compare to Calgary, but Tampa/St. Pete certainly has a fair number of tours that pass us by also.  Still, some choice events I'm looking forward to (man, late April is looking busy!):

February 2nd - High on Fire/A Life Once Lost/Saviours

April 23rd - Ministry, Meshuggah, Hemlock

April 26th -
"Lambs For Lions" tour - Converge, The Red Chord and Genghis Tron (Coliseum will be the support by that point, not Baroness)

April 30th - Today Is The Day w/Rwake, Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky, Complete Failure (haven't heard of those last 2, I'm afraid)

Hopefully, Obituary will finally have a local show in support of Xecutioner's Return sometime this Spring.  I know Tampa doesn't have quite the same death metal heft that it had at one time, but I still expect for a band to show some love for the hometown folks...

I'd LOVE to see this tour (minus Hemlock).  Ministry is always excellent live, and even though I thought The Last Sucker was a bit of a letdown, I'd love to catch them again.

Agreed,

I've pretty exited for Megadeth though, never seen 'em.

High on Fire don't top Megadeth.  Maybe at this very moment they're a stronger band, but over the long haul it's not even close.  And even in their twilight, Megadeth puts on a top-fucking-notch show, every time.

I saw Sworn Enemy in Anaheim tonight. Good show. I am pretty open-minded so I can get into most anything when it's pulled off well live, and these guys are passionate about what they do. I know I'll get shit from most of the MR crowd but I don't give a shit. I was headbanging on the side of the stage most of the night.

Ehhh...I've never been a huge Megadeth guy.   I'm not going to deny their classics, but I've always found Mustaine to be more than a tad overrated, and the band hasn't released anything interesting in over 15 years.

By contrast, High on Fire have released three iconic albums in a row, each one rising in quality from the last.  One of the genre most unique and vital bands vs. a geezer who's lost his edge?  Out with the old, in with the new.

I got news fer ya, Matt Pike is pretty much a geezer. Wink

To me, HoF's selling point is their live show.  Of course I live in the same town as them, so I get to see them play in small venues in front of a lot of their friends, so they're always in a good mood and the shows are extremely representative of that. But I honestly find myself returning mostly to their first and latest album when I listen to them at home.  Surrounded By Thieves gets spun occasionally, and Blessed Black Wings never actually clicked with me.

And NO, not out with the old, in with the new!  You're crazy dude!  Fucking CRAZY!  Of all the shows I saw last year, the ones that truly saaa-LAYED were "old geezers" -- BROCAS HELM, HEAVEN & HELL, OBITUARY, SUFFOCATION, ENSLAVED, THE MELVINS, etc.  Hmm

There's nothing quite like seeing geezers who still get a boner for metal. Awesome stuff.

Bro, gimme some credit.   I never said anything negative about geezers that still kick ass. Big Smile  I hardly think any of those bands have lost their edge.

And I've been to enough (5-ish?) HoF shows in the past 2 years to completely agree with you about their live show being their selling point, and that Matt Pike ain't no spring chicken.

There's this old dude I see at every metal show in Nashville--I call him "Fat Metal Tim Robbins," because he looks like Tim Robbins except fat and with a Judas Priest shirt.  He's probably about fifty-ish.  He's at every damn show--Napalm Death, 1329, Goatwhore, Suffocation, Ozzfest, doesn't matter...  Sometimes he gets drunk and gets upset at the audience if we're not showing what he feels is the proper respect for Cryptopsy or whomever...  I know some people who've met him and apparently he's cool as shit, but I've never talked to him.  I hope, when I'm fifty, I'm drunk at shows, castigating youngsters for not getting into Cattle Decapitation.

yeah, I did pretty much attach what you said about one geezer to every geezer. What can I say, I'm a touchy geezer who hasn't had his banana and coffee yet...
