Number2:

because i am extremely bored at work (waiting for a meeting to let out so i can go to lunch) i went back and totalled the scores from the 3 categories (prod, sw, and musicianship) on the 4 Amon Amarth reviews and here is what i got:

16 = Versus the World

14.5 = With Oden on Our Side

14.5 = The Crusher

14.0 = Fate of Norns: this one kinda surprised me. it seems to be rated as a distant finisher in most of our lists.

From http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/amon_amarth out of 5 stars with .5 star increments

1) With Oden on Our Side 3.98

2) Versus the World 3.89

3) Once Sent From the Golden Hall 3.79

4) The Avenger 3.79

5) Fate of Norns 3.67

6) The Crusher 3.54

I don't have Verses The World. Seems like that should be the next one I should get. So I ask the hardcore members of Amon Amarth Anonymous, how does it compare to the other stuff?

I'm in the minority that doesn't really dig VTW.  It's much better than Fate of Norns (which is easily the band's most flaccid record), and has far less filler than The Crusher, but it was kind of boring to me.  I like the pedal-to-the-floor Amon Amarth a bit better than the mid-paced-but-hellaciously-epic Amon Amarth, and VTW showcased the latter version.

I think The Avenger balances those two elements perfectly; it's as vicious as anything they've done, but still manages to tell an emotional, gripping story.   One of my all-time favorites, that one.

It's got quite a sad, downtrodden feel compared to their other albums. Its still epic and heavy as fuck, but the atmosphere is very melancholy on songs like "Where Silent Gods Stand Guard" and "Thousand Years Of Oppression." "Death In Fire" is pretty much acknowledged as Amon Amarth's signature song, and all the rest are great as well. Apparently the band was planning on breaking up after the release of VTW, but the strong response to it inspired them to keep going. Definitely their best in my opinion.

wow - i had no idea they were even close to ever breaking up. that would have been tragic.

Great thread for a truly great band. I've been a rabid fan since OSFGH, and though I love all their albums, WOOOS is the first to surpass it for me. So...

With Odin On Our Side

Once sent From A Golden Hall

The Avenger

Versus The World

Sorrow Throughout The Nine Worlds*

Fate of Norns

The Crusher

* are we not counting STTNW cuz it's not a full album (5 songs)? It rocks regardless.

kinda off topic here, but I am alot like you - I always thought Odin was spelled with an "I" but I see that Amon Amarth spell it with an "E" (Oden)....which ones is correct?

I would just like to voice my disagreement with all and any statements that in any way allude to, or directly state, a misconception that Versus the World or Fate of Norns are anything but fucking awesome.

I've always seen "Odin", but I've also seen "Woden", so I checked this out and according to wikipedia, "Odin" is from the norse and appears most common and "Woden" is from angalo-saxon, germanic languages. However I didn't see any "Oden". Maybe it's a Swede thing.

I thought Odin was correct. I do know however, that "Oden" is a Japanese dish that a good friend of mine from Osaka cooks all the time when the weather gets cold.

Great band, just not my cup of tea.

That said, I like to listen to "Vs. the World" when I'm on a raiding mood.

As my grandfather used to say, "remember to pillage before you rape". Automobile
